Just as the recent storm swept through the northwest the previous evening, City swept the visitors aside at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil win for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Losses for United

This scoreline represented successive WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the top team with their title hopes severely dented.

Manchester United's capability to balance domestic and continental soccer with a small team has been a hotly discussed issue since they qualified for the European competition. Reviewing the calendar, it always felt like this was the period that would fully examine this ability. Regrettably for the opposition, they seemed fatigued from start to finish, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

The United manager had sought to freshen things up with a several changes. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought energy, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

Triple Strike

After the Break

The most obvious adjustment came from the United manager at the half-time as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- City player Park came nearest, striking the woodwork, but the visitors were creatively abject and did not manage to produce a solitary shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their advantage when a superb Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the hosts. Having failed to overcome any side who finished above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and United to put them in a favorable situation after nine games.
