Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
