Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also included leaders in various fields.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a Amazon founder.
