Can You Solve It? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Shaped the Modern Globe

There are numerous contenders to claim the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.

According to a new book, however, that honor should go to the automated timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.

“Before automated cutting, building a simple trading ship required approximately ten lumberjacks laboring for 90 days,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, the same amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”

Owing to their speedy mechanical saw, which turned timber to boards with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could build ships more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Netherlands naval, financial as well as artistic dominance in the continent and the world.

The Original True Industrial Machine

The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, was “mankind’s first authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted the rotary movement into up-and-down action for the cutting blade. Another component transformed that same rotary motion into a lateral motion feeding the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment each stroke.

“Each element was modest on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to combine these parts in order that they operated within a precisely synchronized order, sawing on every downward stroke while advancing on every return stroke. It was a remarkably clever application of basic components.”
